Ahhhh my winged minions.  These are one of my favorite insects in the garden.  I’m sure it’s partially because they’re usually feared and misunderstood.  If they sting you it hurts, but unlike yellowjackets or hornets they’re usually fairly docile.  I generally leave their nests wherever they put them up but I try to keep the ones on the porch and by the doors to a minimum.  I’ve sprayed their nests down with the garden hose on plenty of occasions.  They buzz around all over the place but don’t mess with me.  If you hit their nest with your hand, grab one, step on one, etc. they will sting the hell out of you.  It hurts.

Adult wasps mostly feed on honeydew and nectar from plants.  They are voracious hunters of caterpillars and some other soft bodied insects.  The thing is, they don’t eat the caterpillars themselves.  Much more gruesome than that… I usually see them decapitate the caterpillar and take the head back to their nest where they feed it to their young.  Yum! If you see wasps flying around your plants… they’re working for you.  We have our biggest problems with cutworms, army worms, etc. in the winter, when wasps aren’t active.  When I see the paper wasps building nests in the spring I know its curtains for those punks.

Here’s a great video I found on youtube of a paper wasp decapitating a caterpillar and flying off with it’s trophy.  Fast forward to 3:50 to watch the wasp finish biting the head off the caterpillar and fly away with it.  I’ve watched them do this same thing in my garden many times.

Oh paper wasp, sometimes you’re the predator and sometimes you’re the pray.  You can actually see the itsy bitsy spider that killed this wasp in the webbing below the wasp.

They’re called paper wasps because they build waterproof paper nests out of bits of dead wood they collect and mix with their own saliva.  Having a water source helps them build their nests.
