Leaffooted bugs have done some serious damage to my garden in the past. This year they haven’t been as bad as last year.  I’m not sure if it’s that way for everyone in Austin, or if it’s because I recognize them better in their egg and nymph stage now and kill them on sight.   As adults they’re highly mobile and tough and feed on a variety of plants, so if they fly off your tomatoes when you try to smush them and land on your beans… they don’t seem to mind. As nymphs they’re gregarious, meaning they like to be social and hang out in clusters.

They’re bright orange, can’t fly and you can smush about 50 of them with the swipe of your hand. Leaffooted Bug nymphs look much like Milkweed Assassin Bug nymphs, which we also have in Austin, and you really don’t want to kill them because they’re beneficial and possibly one of the leaffooted bug’s predators. It’s hard to tell the difference between the two because they’re both so small, orange and similar. One good way to tell is if you see a bunch of them clustered together then they’re leaffooted bugs.  So when I saw this little solo nymph below I couldn’t tell if it was a leaffooted or assassin bug. Once I took the picture with the super macro setting I could clearly see it’s proboscis sucking the life juice from our sunflower…. leaffooted bug.  Kill kill kill.  If your eyes are good enough to see the tiny details, the assassin bug nymphs might have white dots on their backs instead of the black spikes like the leaffooted bug in the photo below.

The eggs of leaffooted bugs are pretty easy to recognize when you see them.
