Io Moth Caterpillar (Automeris io)

Sister Squid found this Io Moth Caterpillar crawling around in our Yard Long Beans.  Neither of us knew what it as and luckily we did’t try and pick it up.  The Io Moth Caterpillar is one of a number of stinging caterpillars that call Texas home.  The Puss Moth or Asp, a fluffy off-white color, is the most well known of the stinging caterpillars.  From what little information I’ve been able to find on the WWW the sting of the Io Moth Caterpillar is not as bad as the Puss Moth.  But, from one account I read online it’s sting is massively painful:

It was the most painful sting I ever felt in my life.  I’ll never walk barefoot in Florida again.
